Taipa Rug- a weave to feel nature underfoot

The Rug TAIPA is a contemporary textile proposal. Its sustainable design is a solution for bamboo shavings and silk primitive yarn residues that are disposed of by the Brazilian textile and curtains factory we have partnership with in this project. The rug uses an old technique for constructing Brazilian houses called Taipa or Pau a Pique as a structural reference. The technique uses natural elements such as clay and bamboo for building an architectural support weave. 

The raw materials were chosen through a long research process and the challenge of recovering elements that would be disposed of in the environment and reusing them in the rug.

O Tapete TAIPA é uma proposta têxtil contemporânea e design sustentável como solução para aparas de bambu e resíduos de fios primitivos de seda que seriam descartados. O tapete tem como referência estrutural a técnica construtiva antiga de casas brasileiras chamada Taipa ou Pau a Pique, onde elementos encontrados na própria natureza, como o barro e o bambu formam uma trama de sustentação arquitetônica.

As matérias-primas foram escolhidas por meio de um longo processo de pesquisa e do desafio de recuperar elementos que seriam descartados no meio ambiente e reaproveitá-los no tapete.

Taipa or Pau-a-Pique (Brazilian rammed earth) is an ancient construction technique that consists of intertwining vertical wooden sticks fixed to the ground with horizontal beams – usually made of bamboo – tied together by vines, giving rise to a punctured panel that is filled with clay to form a wall.

Taipa is a construction technique that uses raw earth as its main component, together with wood, bamboo or vine, to create a combination that will support the building. A building style made with resources found in nature itself.

A Taipa ou Pau-a-Pique é uma ancestral técnica construtiva que consiste no entrelaçamento de varas verticais de madeira fixadas ao solo com vigas horizontais – geralmente de bambu – amarradas entre si por cipós, dando origem a um painel perfurado que é preenchido com barro para formar uma parede.

A Taipa é uma técnica de construção que utiliza a terra crua como componente principal, juntamente com a madeira, o bambu para criar uma combinação que irá suportar a construção. Um estilo de edificação feito com recursos encontrados na própria natureza.

The rug is produced in a manual loom in partnership with the company O Casulo Feliz, bringing together industrial and craftsmanship techniques. The rug has a flat structure that consists of the interweaving between the warp with the silk primitive yarn and the ramie weft, interspersed with bamboo shavings.

It is a rug that allows the coexistence of different materials from nature and establishes a new function and time for elements that would otherwise be rejected by the same industry that produces the rug. And so does our main reference,the building technique Pau a Pique, which makes use of elements and resources found in nature.

O tapete é produzido em tear manual em parceria com a empresa O Casulo Feliz, reunindo técnicas industriais e artesanais. O tapete tem uma estrutura plana que consiste no entrelaçamento entre o urdume com o fio primitivo de seda e a trama de rami, intercalados as aparas de bambu.

É um tapete que permite a coexistência de diferentes materiais da natureza e estabelece uma nova função e tempo para elementos que de outra forma seriam rejeitados pela mesma indústria que o produz. Assim como nossa principal referência, a técnica construtiva Pau a Pique, que utiliza elementos e recursos encontrados na natureza. 

The Rug TAIPA fuses creativity, nature, innovation and sustainability in the making of a bio weave finding a use for unusual raw materials neglected by the textile industry, becoming an original tapestry with the combination of malleable textile yarns interwoven with rigid bamboo fiber.

The choice of atypical materials  and its reuse as an environmental solution for its wastes makes the project economically viable.The creation of this original weft and the materials used in their most original form are our main innovation base, prompting a sensory-aesthetic experience without equal between the rug and the user.
